Mount Isa Mines pours cold water on super pit

Summary: Our readers might like the idea of a Mount Isa Mines super pit but Glencore does not.....

A few days after the LNP announced an election commitment to spend $5 million on a feasibility study for the project, Mount Isa Mines has poured cold water on it.

“Our team in Mount Isa continues to thoroughly assess all opportunities to add value to our mining and processing operations,” a Mount Isa Mines spokesperson said.

“Extensive study work into the feasibility of the Mount Isa Open Pit has demonstrated the project is not viable.”

The spokesperson said their operations were an important part of the North Queensland industrial base “which makes a vital contribution to the State’s economy”.

The news will be disappointing to many of our readers.

A North West Star poll on the original election commitment story attracted over 400 votes and recorded 90% support for the idea.

However the news MIM have rejected it confirms what they originally said when the idea was first proposed in the 2014 North West Queensland Strategic Development Study.
