Do Australians still want to be miners?

I have been working FIFO for 5 years, going from a well payed job to a loss of conditions and remuneration. It’s an employers market with Temp firms and companies offering flat rates and no redundancy. Quite often paying no better than roles in Perth. That’s the real truth why people are reluctant to come back to mining. I was at Barrow Island and Wheastone, great conditions, great jobs. Now I’m at the Gruyere Project, which is six months probation, quarterly superannuation instalments, $200 a week PIP and no redundancy. Like the Politicians, there’s the story and then there's the truth. David Nuttall, 05/10/18
